John Hughes's (The Breakfast Club director) views on teenage life shows that he knows about the pressure many teenagers go through in their every day life; either coming from their parents or their own "friends". Also how people usually judge without knowing what's really going on.
The classic stereotype that I felt identified with was Brian Johnson "the nerd". In the movie Brian is this student with straigh A's, he is always doing his homework, and worried about his marks. When he found out he had failed a school project, the idea of killing himself crossed his mind, he hid a gun in his locker (this is how he ended up in detention that saturday). He often felt pressured by his parents, he thought that if he didnt do well at school they wouldnt be okay with it, and that he would get in big trouble. Suicide was the only way he saw to get out of that situation; luckily he got caugh before he did anything. While he was at detention he met new people, and found out that he wasnt the only one being pressured by their parents. For example one of them was pressured by his that to be tough and be good at sports.
Often our parents pressure us with school because they want us to have a bright future,and to do our best; but sometimes they don't realize how much their high expectations affect the way we think and act. I feel identified with this character, because my parents often push me to do better, but not in the best ways; and good marks is something I must have in order for them to be pleased with me.
Could this movie be remade?
Many things would have to change in order for this movie to get to the targeted audience. Teenagers now days have changed quite a lot compared to the teenagers on the 80's; the clothes are not the same neither is the way we speak, or the way we behave. For this movie to get its point across the lines would must be adapted to "2013's teenagers language". Today teachers don't treat us the way the principle in the movie did, (at least not in Canada haha), "eat my shorts" is not something you hear on the halls anymore and if you do hear it, is not as offensive as it was back then; the term "slut" now is given to anybody, whether they sleep around or not; prude girls? seems like we don't have too many left. Everything is happening so fast now days that to make a movie about teenagers would take a while, if we want to cover everything of course.
Personally i liked this movie, even though many people found it boring, I looked beyond that, and understood the message behind it's lines.
